Many of us carry memories of water — and not all of them are pleasant. Maybe something unsettling happened in childhood: you slipped off a dock, fell through a swim ring and couldn’t touch the bottom, or simply got scared. Perhaps someone just said “Swim, swim!” — and you tried, only to end up struggling in the water. Maybe you were pressured to swim before you were ready, with water in your nose and mouth, leaving behind an uncomfortable memory.

Fear of water can arise from many different situations, and it can feel very strong. It may prevent us from going into the water, even when we truly want to. Perhaps you have children or grandchildren and would love to swim with them — but you worry that you wouldn’t know how to help if something happened. Or maybe you’ve decided that now is the time to learn to swim, yet the thought of water makes you anxious. In exactly these kinds of situations, adult swimming lessons can provide a safe and gentle way to face your fear.

The good news is: fear of water can be overcome. It takes time, gentleness, and the right kind of practice. Vedessä.fi offers adult swimming lessons in Oulu, where fear of water is faced step by step, allowing everyone to progress at their own pace and build trust in the water. When swimming instruction for adults is carried out calmly and professionally, fear gradually turns into confidence, and being in the water can become a source of joy.

In this post, I will give you a couple of tips on how to start your journey in the water safely.

How to start?

Tip 1 : Start slowly and at your own pace. The most important thing is to begin in a way that feels right for you. Choose a swimming pool with shallow areas — a depth where you can lie down comfortably without feeling anxious. Even if it’s called the “children’s pool,” it’s perfectly suitable and safe for adults too.

Begin by getting used to the sensation of water. Lie down gently and let your ears go under. Focus on your breathing — vartalo alkaa rentoutua pikkuhiljaa.

Let's add some movement

Tip 2: Once lying in the water starts to feel natural, try sitting up and gently moving your legs in the water. Notice how it feels — is your whole leg moving, or just part of it? Is your leg stiff or relaxed?

💡 Tip : A relaxed leg moves more easily in water.

Observe how your leg moves:

  • Does only your knee lift?
  • Is movement happening only below the knee?
  • Or can you move your whole leg from hip to toe?

The goal is for your leg to move smoothly, gently, and as one unit. And remember, relaxation is more important than strength. Try speeding up the movement. Make the motion smaller, and you might find your leg moves even faster.

Take someone with you

Tip 3: Getting into the water can feel easier when someone familiar is with you. Invite a friend, partner, or even your adult child to join you. You can go together to a shallow pool, talk, laugh, and encourage each other.

You can also practice small things together:

  • Splash water on your faces
  • Float side by side
  • Blow bubbles and try gentle kicks

💡 Tip : Agree that one person stays close at all times — even just standing nearby can bring comfort and help you relax.

Practicing together can make the water feel more joyful and less intimidating. Shared experiences can also build trust — in yourself and in the water.

Overcoming fear of water doesn’t happen overnight, but every small step brings you closer to confidence and joy in the water. Calm practice, gentle guidance, and a safe environment help you build trust in the water. Remember: every success is valuable, and learning to swim as an adult is just as possible as it is for a child.
