Tips for open water, a story from spring, and a June offer

Summer is just around the corner, and many people are already thinking about their first open water swims. When the water begins to warm up, it becomes clear how different swimming outdoors feels compared to the pool. The bottom can be unpredictable, visibility is lower, and the temperature can surprise you. This makes early summer a perfect moment to refresh your swimming skills and return to the basics before the beaches get busy.

I want to share a few practical tips for summer swimming, as well as a story from one of my spring students who made great progress in a short time

Swimming in open water

Have you ever noticed how different swimming feels in open water compared to the pool? In Finland, lakes and the sea are often murky, and you cannot see the bottom. You never quite know what your foot might touch. The temperature difference can also feel intense. In the pool, the water and air are steady and familiar, but outdoors your body reacts in a different way.

If you are not a confident swimmer, I recommend starting slowly. Walk in the shallow water and feel the bottom. After you dip in, give your breathing a moment to settle. The temperature difference between your body and the water can feel tight at first, but it eases quickly. When your breathing becomes steadier, you can lengthen your exhale and start moving along the shoreline at your own pace.

Swimming in the pool during summer

If you prefer swimming in the pool during summer, it can actually be surprisingly peaceful. Just remember to check the opening hours, because many pools have maintenance breaks during the summer months. Outdoor pools open for the season and offer their own summer atmosphere. There is no outdoor pool in Oulu yet, but you might find one at your holiday destination.

With a little preparation, you can enjoy your summer swims much more.

A story from spring

I want to share a story about one of my spring students. She had a clear goal for this summer. She wanted to learn to swim well enough to continue practicing on her own. She was also leaving for work abroad (at the coast) and hoped that swimming would give her confidence there as well.

We discussed whether a five lesson package would be enough or if she would need more. We decided to try. After just a couple of lessons, her breathing became smoother, which was a big step forward. Getting up from the water still felt difficult, but she practiced regularly on her own, even with a tight schedule.

After five lessons she could float on her back and stomach, move more comfortably in the water, and trust that the water would support her. Breathing with the kicks and arm pulls in front crawl would have needed more time, but the most important thing was achieved. She gained confidence and the courage to continue practicing independently.

The most helpful thing was the patience and starting slowly and practicing move again and again.

This is the heart of learning as an adult. Trust grows from small successes.

June offer

If you are hoping for a more confident summer in the water, this is a great moment to begin. During June, when you purchase a five lesson package, your first trial lesson is free.

One gentle session can already make a difference. Five lessons can change your whole summer.
