A few months ago, I interviewed potential clients by casually asking passers‑by whether they could swim. Most people answered yes. But when we talked a bit more, it became clear that many of them didn’t actually meet the definition of real swimming ability.

Why is that?

What ability to swim really mean?

Many of us assume that making a small loop at the cottage shore or “paddling around” in the water means we can swim. But that’s not quite the same as being truly water‑safe. According to the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation (SUH):

A person who, after falling into deep water so that their head goes under, resurfaces and swims 200 meters continuously—50 meters of which on their back—is considered able to swim.SUH – uimataito Suomessa

This difference between perceived and actual swimming ability may partly explain why last summer’s drowning statistics were so tragic. We may think we can swim well enough, but in an unfamiliar environment things can change quickly: a sudden drop‑off, a moment of panic, or simply realizing too late that you don’t have the stamina to return to shore.

Strengthening Skills as an Adult

One of the core ideas behind Vedessä.fi is to offer adults a chance to strengthen the skills they already have—or learn entirely new ones. We can refine your technique, explore different swimming styles, or make your “cottage breaststroke” lighter, smoother and more efficient.

Even small adjustments can make swimming feel easier and more enjoyable.

The Most Important Skill: Breathing and Comfort in the Water

For adults, the most essential skill is learning to put your face in the water and manage your breathing. When breathing is calm and controlled, the whole body relaxes—and swimming becomes significantly easier.

You might already be able to put your face in the water, but it feels uncomfortable. Or perhaps the thought alone brings up the fear of water entering your nose or throat. This is extremely common—and completely trainable.

Imagine Swimming Feeling Light and Effortless

Picture yourself swimming 200 meters in deep water with confidence. No tension, no panic—just steady, relaxed movement. Feeling safe, supported, and in control.

This is absolutely achievable, whether you’re a beginner or simply want to improve your existing skills.
